Designed and printed at The Aesthetic Union in San Francisco, this limited-run (150) print captures the rugged coastal beauty of Big Sur. James Lewis Tucker used a reduction block print method for the piece, hand-carving one block over and over for each layer in the 10-color process. It was printed on a 1932 Vandercook letterpress affectionately named Big Bill. In homage to the poet Robinson Jeffers (who lived in nearby Carmel), we titled the print “The Old Voice of the Ocean.”

18” x 12”, 100% Cotton, Signed and numbered.

THE INSPIRATION

Big Sur & JEFFERS

Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was one of the great poets of California’s natural world, writing from a stone redoubt he built himself. Reverent, fiery, often controversial in his day, Jeffers continues to influence writers, artists and activists with strong ties to the environment. The first line of his poem “Natural Music” inspired this print: The old voice of the ocean.
