ARTIST & DOCTOR

chip thomas

Drive the eastern rim of the Grand Canyon and you’ll likely spot the grand-scale photo murals of Chip Thomas. Inspired by classic ‘60s photojournalism, Thomas’s work delves into the familial and cultural connections that bond the Navajo Nation, where he’s served as a public-health doctor for decades. With an emphasis on inverting customary power structures, Chip describes his work as aimed at fostering an atmosphere of wellness on the reservation.

ULTRARUNNER

taylor nowlin

A Flagstaff-based nurse and endurance athlete, Taylor established the “fastest known time” for a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim run in 2019. (In other words, she ran all the way across the canyon...and then back again.) As she told us, training the body to run more than 50 kilometers takes years. Overcoming the fear of getting eaten by animals takes some doing, too.
